Oakley is like neighboring Hyde Park’s cooler younger sibling. With less expensive houses and a more hip restaurant scene, many young professionals are often attracted to Oakley. But that doesn’t mean that Oakley is new; in fact, part of Oakley’s charm comes from the many historic homes and buildings that are part of the community. Other draws include a variety of community events, strong schools, a healthy lifestyle, and a central location.

History

Oakley was established in 1898. Originally known as “Four Mile,” it was a popular stop for wagon drivers in the early nineteenth century. The community began to grow when the Oakley Race Course and the Cincinnati Milling Machine Company found their homes in Oakley. Oakley began to grow up around the needs of the mill and its employees, and was annexed to Cincinnati in 1913.  Oakley draws its name from Annie Oakley, an American sharpshooters who once resided there.

Community

The community of Oakley is largely centered around the main business district, Oakley Square. The heart of the square is Geier Esplanade. This oblong park is lined with trees and benches, making it the perfect place for any outdoor activity, from walking a dog to relaxing in nature. Flowers bloom in the summer, planted in memory of Geier Esplanade’s namesakes: Mr. Fred Geier and Mr. Philip O. Geier, Sr.

If the Esplanade is Oakley’s heart, its soul is the surrounding shops, restaurants, and events. One popular Oakley event is the Oakley Fancy Flea Market. Held at Madtree Brewing, the Brewery is transformed into a lively marketplace every second Saturday during the summertime. Local vendors sell everything from crafts to cocktails.

Another popular event is Oakley After Hours. Once a month from May to October businesses in Oakley Square remain open later and offer deals, discounts, and fun. This monthly street festival has recently become a live music venue as well.

Offering a wide range of events, Oakley Square serves as the main community hub for residents of Oakley.

Restaurants

Oakley is home to a wide variety of local restaurants and bars. Offering a wide range of food accompanied by lively atmospheres, restaurants in Oakley is the place to be.

A classic hangout is Madtree Brewery. Brewing craft beers with sustainable practices, they are working to be the most respected brewers in the region. Situated within an old warehouse, Madtree was founded to create not only craft beer, but a thriving community that surrounds it. And they succeeded. Every night people go to Madtree to eat, drink and socialize. They mingle within the brewery’s walls and spill out into the courtyard when it’s warm. Also, Madtree doesn’t only offer beer. Housed within Madtree’s taproom, Catch-a-Fire Café creates handcrafted pizzas that can be enjoyed by everyone. Whether looking for a hip hangout or craft beer, Madtree is the place to be.

However, lively, sustainable restaurants are in no short supply in Oakley. Just a couple of blocks away from Madtree, the Sleepy Bee serves up breakfast and lunch options that are both healthy and delicious. Nearby, Aglamesis Ice Cream Parlor has been making ice cream since Oakley became a part of Cincinnati.

Fast food options also abound. Oakley Station is not only convenient for shopping needs but is also home to a variety of many chain restaurants.

And, if none of these options are enticing, Oakley’s central location allows for just a quick trip to access the culinary offerings of Madisonville, Hyde Park, and Pleasant Ridge.

Oakley Schools

Many school-aged kids live in Oakley, serviced by schools both in and out of the neighborhood. In fact, 12% of the population of Oakley are aged 0-17. St. Cecilia is a private, Catholic school serving students from Pre-Kindergarten to grade 8 in Oakley. The school has a 1:15 teacher to student ratio, allowing for personalized instruction for all students. An education at St. Cecilia goes beyond the classroom, though. Emphasizing student character growth and cultural understanding, students come out of St. Cecilia as well rounded people.

In terms of public schools, none are located directly in Oakley, but Oakley students are served by nearby Kilgour and Hyde Park Elementary Schools. For high school, many Oakley students attend Walnut Hills High School, Clark Montessori, or a variety of surrounding private schools.

Health

Although Hyde Park often gets the reputation as the “running neighborhood,” Oakley easily rivals that. With beautiful homes and quiet side streets, many people take in the beauty of Oakley outdoors and go for walks throughout the neighborhood. Oakley has a healthy mindset that shines.

This healthy mindset is shown throughout the neighborhood, from its proximity to many top-notch health care options to a plethora of fitness facilities that call Oakley home. Mercy Health’s Rookwood Medical Hospital Center, Children’s Hospital, and Good Samaritan are all located a mere ten minutes away from Oakley. In Oakley Square, an optometrist and dentist are also present.

Along with healthcare facilities, Oakley is home to many gyms, sports courts, and fitness classes. LA Fitness and Crunch fitness are both accessible gyms for all fitness goals. Pure Barre, Body Alive, and Prism Pilates offer group fitness classes featuring different kinds of exercise. For a free option, Oakley Park Recreation Center operates a pool, park, and courts that are open to the public.

Oakley will support all the health needs and wants that people have. From health care to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and everything in between, Oakley has you covered.

Location

Oakley has a central location that makes it easy to access other parts of town. Oakley is just a 15-minute drive from downtown and the University of Cincinnati is just over 10 minutes away by car. I-71 is easily accessed from Oakley, as well as the Norwood Lateral.

Metro buses also run routes frequently through Oakley, connecting it with other neighborhoods. By bus, downtown is only about a 15-minute commute.

Other neighborhoods Oakley is near to are those that border it:  Madisonville, Hyde Park, and Pleasant Ridge.

With its vibrant feel, central location, and many retailers, Oakley is a lively neighborhood. Historic houses at reasonable prices and up and coming bars and restaurants attract many young professionals, but in Oakley, anyone can be at home.
